It was a dream that started over four years ago, but that dream is now a reality that not even inclement weather could deter. Cincinnati Public Schools officially broke ground for construction of the new Carson School located in Price Hill. GBBN Architects was selected by CPS to design the replacement for the 90-year-old landmark structure.
“This project wasn’t completed by just a few people,” said Matthew Schottelkotte, AIA, project designer and firm principal. “This was a collaborative effort of hundreds of people who make up the learning community of Carson School.”
According to Matthew, there were three key reasons that a new building was needed versus renovating the existing structure. The original building was designed and built FOR the community, whereas the new building has been designed and will be built BY the community, namely the students, parents, teachers and various community groups who live, work and play in the Price Hill area. The new school will include a larger cafeteria, a stage, new library, media center, music room, art room and gymnasium.
In addition, the original building was built to educate the children. The new building will not only education the children, but it will also serve the community as a whole, as it will be used by students during the day and be open to Price Hill residents in the evening.
Lastly, the new school is an example of how education and how children are educated has evolved over the last 90 years. The commitment by both CPS and the Price Hill community shows how much they care about the students and the quality of education they receive.
