Just before the holidays, a local charitable competition was held in Cincinnati. Interested designers were asked to select a children’s book and build a gingerbread house to match. The books and gingerbread masterpieces where given to the Ronald McDonald house of Greater Cincinnati.
GBBNers, Juliette Bezold, Jane Goode and Aaron Kingsley chose “Kate’s Castle” by Julie Lawson and Frances Tyrrell. The creative trio pulled together their talents (both design and baking) and earned 1st Honorable Mention. “The competition was stiff,” said a Bezold, who proudly displays the oven mitt trophy at her desk for all to see.
The grocery list included: six pounds of white flour, six pounds of rye flour, five pounds powdered sugar, and two pounds of honey. The less-than-light concoction actually burnt out Bezold’s mixer. Not willing to throw in the towel or stir the mixture by hand, her husband ‘McGyvered’ his drill with one of the beaters – crisis averted!
“The entire experience was a lot of fun,” said Bezold. “We’re already planning ahead for next year’s competition!”
