Cincinnati Children's Give Back Day

GBBN Staff volunteered to work with children and their families at Cinncinati Children’s Sickle Cell (SCD) Research and Education day, an event held to create awareness of sickle cell disease in a way that was fun and interactive for those suffering from the disease. The event served more than 80 families and over 600 children, adolescents, adults.

Children and families learned yoga and meditation, enjoyed stepping dance lessons, made lyrics about sickle cell disease with help from the Hip Hop Congress, and played life-size games while the parents could participate in presentations on important clinical and research topics, such as the importance of holistic health, academic/vocational planning and pain management. Families had the opportunity to meet others who are struggling with the disease and learn ways on how to cope with its effects.

GBBN staff also took pictures of the children who are living with Sickle Cell disease and created a video for their families. The photographs will later be part of a mural installation in the hospital.
