GBBN's experience with sustainable design dates back to the renovation of the Alms & Doepke Building which was evacuated due to causing respiratory problems among inhabitants and later labeled a "SICK Building".
Together with the Construction Manager and Hamilton County Commissioners, GBBN transformed and preserved the 300,000-square-foot historical building for Hamilton County. Utilizing a unique turn-key delivery system and a strong partnering relationship, the building was converted into the Department of Human Services' new home in 18 months start to finish, half the time than originally estimated.
Through creative solutions, GBBN was able to save the historical building, improve dangerously poor indoor air quality, introduce daylighting concepts, and improve energy efficiency. The Alms & Doepke Building could arguably be the most sustainable building in Cincinnati.
