Talcott Hall Annex

GBBN worked with Berea College to renovate Talcott Hall and Annex, an existing dormitory originally constructed in 1917. The design maintained some of the existing building features, while providing multiple dorm room layouts and living spaces that support guided learning, community and collaboration. The Annex facility provides much needed gathering space for two dormitory wings, incorporating long distance learning capabilities and accessibility to a media retrieval system.

Both Berea College and GBBN Architects are advocates for Sustainable Design. To support this mission, GBBN utilized recyclable building products, provided energy efficient mechanical systems, upgraded all existing insulation values, introduced day lighting to interior corridors and gathering spaces, and recycled demolished building materials.

Adding to the complexity of the project was the issue of phasing. GBBN was successful in managing the current and post occupancy schedules over a three year construction period, to keep the campus running smoothly.

According to the jury for the AIA Kentucky Awards, the interior space "reflects the future" and the "use of lighting creates an inviting and lively space".
