Aligned with the cardinal points, the new astronomical observatory is located on the highest point on campus and visible campus wide. The observatory is the control center for reconfiguring, broadcasting and tracking and features a telescope room that opens to the sky via a sliding roof. The operable roof covers the entire 1,000 sq ft building and takes approximately eight minutes to open. Located inside, are four computer-controlled telescopes, digital cameras and a telescope-dedicated computer system. The design honors the early Greek tradition of astronomy through form and placement, while still maintaining the existing architectural language.

Solutions to fit building into existing campus language while providing sense of place reminiscent of early star gazing

  • Design blends with campus architecture using similar material palette and respecting existing building forms
  • Sited so the sequence of progression towards the building relates to the historical path of an ancient temple
  • Incorporates columns reminiscent of Greek ruins

Response to moveable roof (Issues: stability, exposure to elements)

  • Integrated rolling industrial grade crane components to solve horizontal movement
  • Wind up lift is controlled by steel that engages below the wheel as the roof lifts

Maximizing tracking capability on a site adjacent to a busy street with light and noise pollution
Solutions:

  • To enable constant star tracking, the roof retracts completely to maximize southern, eastern, and western sky exposure
  • Multiple roof positions afford the opportunity to minimize light pollution
  • Simple floor plan supports the viewing process

Creating flexibility for multiple user type & programmatic requirements (College, primary, secondary, public, and campus receptions)

  • Access possible by foot, car, or bus for multiple users
  • Sited near public parking for community at large
  • Additional classroom space and/or reception space is created when the roof is fully open and resting on the exterior columns
