The renovation of the historic Ursuline Academy building for the American Cancer Society was made available through a long-term lease with Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Designed to serve as a “home away from home” for caregivers and oncology patients being treated in local hospitals, the building provides short-term residential accommodations, made available free of charge to those families through a referral by the physician.
Of key importance was the creation of common spaces designed to encourage a sense of community and relationships among caregivers and patients staying at the Lodge. The former chapel was re-purposed as a living room, featuring new windows for improved natural light. An adjoining exterior terrace overlooks a respite garden and fountain. Taking best advantage of existing spaces and details in the building led to the relocation of stained glass, intricately carved fireplaces, and other historical elements that make the Lodge more comfortable and less institutional for those who spend time there.
