Sampson Group / Verizon Megacenter Building
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Size: 23,000 SF
Originally the headquarters of Calgon Corporation, this 130,000 SF building currently houses the customer service and technical operations services for Verizon, a growing telecommunications and high-speed cable internet provider. EDGE studio provided site selection & feasibility services, as well as architectural design and construction administration for the base building.
EDGE designed a 23,000 SF addition to the building, creating a dynamic, double-height core atrium space that houses all of Verizon’s community/staff spaces including auditoriums, conference rooms, cafe and breakrooms, training spaces and general circulation/ community interaction spaces. The remaining building houses call-center office and technical space. A lobby addition and additional exit stairs were designed to accommodate a secondary tenant which occupies approximately 20,000 SF of the remaining building. The exterior facade is characterized by perforated metal screens that provide sunscreening along the west facade during working hours and project a vibrant, glowing image when lit from the interior during evening hours. Economical design interventions such as this helped the developer meet his pro forma goals while attracting and securing a long-term lease from a growing company seeking an attractive and highly visible image along a high-traffic business corridor.
The project received a 2004 Citation of Merit from the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and a NAIOP award in 2005
