Seed Capital Kentucky / West Louisville Food Port
Location: Louisville, Kentucky
Scope: Master Plan, Architectural Service
Size: 24 Acres
Working in partnership with nonprofit organization Seed Capital Kentucky, GBBN and OMA will commence work this summer to overhaul a vacant 24-acre brownfield industrial site creating a new community mixed-use development to support the local food economy and neighborhood. The recently released Master Plan of the West Louisville FoodPort revealed the design of the site, which includes space for an urban farm, retail, a recycling center, food truck plaza, community spaces, a kitchen incubator, and even an anaerobic digester to convert the facility’s organic waste back into usable energy.
The $50M project is expected to bring significant economic impact to Louisville. A 2012 Study by Seed Capital found that local residents are demanding more local food and “commercial buyers are willing to spend an additional $139 million-for a total of $353 million-per year on local food.” Additionally, an expected 200+ permanent jobs will be created within the FoodPort.
