Steiner and Associates / Newport on the Levee
Location: Newport, Kentucky
Size: 10 acres/New Construction
Newport-on-the-Levee is a 10-acre entertainment district on the Ohio River in Newport, Kentucky, anchored by the Newport Aquarium. GBBN was the architect for the entire district, including a 2,000-car underground parking garage, 20-screen cineplex, retailers, restaurants and other entertainment attractions. Servicing for tenants is carefully hidden for best guest experience. The team worked closely with the Corps of Engineers to integrate the project with the existing levee system, critical to building on a river with flooding potential.
Design of the buildings references the historic context of Newport, Kentucky, creating animated spaces that feature views of the river, bridges and Cincinnati skyline. Active programming of plazas with events and performers engage guests year round, garnering top rankings by Zagat and Google as a family entertainment destination.
The project has been catalytic for renaissance by the City and other private developers. Adjacent to this area is new commercial development, and multiple streetscape and riverfront improvements for public festivals, including GBBN’s transformation of the L&N Bridge into the ‘Purple People Pedestrian Bridge’.
