Teens have a new space to create, collaborate, and learn within the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s East Liberty branch. The Studio Hive is a ‘room within a room’ creating an intriguing image that defines the threshold into the Teen Zone. The hive provides an intimate space for teens to work intensely on multi-media and digital productions. We developed a 3-dimensional model of the hive which was shared with fabricators at River Productions to collaborate on the development of details. The final product was fabricated directly from the model, eliminating the need for conventional construction documents. River Productions then fully installed the hive in their studio as a mock-up then disassembled and permanently reinstalled at the East Liberty branch. Made of wood and sound absorbent industrial felt, the hive evokes curiosity and encourages teens to think beyond the box.

The connection to both the remaining library space and to the exterior provides teens with a sense of their context within a larger social whole and environment while they occupy a space that is truly and uniquely theirs.
