Black box theater
Our team participated in a design competition to create an addition to the existing Higher Education University Center (UC). The design provides a welcoming and recognizable entrance to the University campus and is framed by the existing building and the main campus garage. Providing programs that augment both the recreation and student activity programs of the UC, the structure’s form and materials enhance the presence and image of the existing building.
The layering of space and activity through both the new and existing structures is visible from the exterior of the building. The Crevasse identifies the recreation side of the building, activated by the rock climbing activities within it. A suspended jogging track links the new program with the existing east atrium at the second level, while a new student lounge overlooks the existing basketball courts.
The Cube houses the black box theater, its main floor located at the lower level, easily accessed from the first floor lobby. The Sky Garden, an exterior courtyard green space above the theater, provides exterior dining, gathering and program space adjacent to campus dining facilities.
