Shady Lane School / Shady Lane School

Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh Chapter AIA Award Winner

Program Elements:
Flexible classrooms
Ancillary spaces

Our team provided architectural services to transform this former mine safety laboratory to an early childhood education center. The design considers the school’s emphasis on educational philosophies developed in the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. According to these philosophies, the classroom environment is a catalyst in encouraging discovery, exploration and the creation of meaning. Architecture is used as a tool to encourage emotional and cognitive development. The project required flexible spaces with a clear identity and purpose that could be constantly rearranged to better reflect the needs and personalities of the children. Use of color is intentionally neutral, so the children’s artwork becomes the focus of the space.
