This full renovation of Benedum Hall includes a full upgrade to the building’s mechanical systems to accommodate new research and teaching laboratories. The first eight stories, 255,000 sf of laboratories, classrooms, offices and library space, have been renovated in the first of two phases of the project. Construction on Phase Two, renovation of floors 9 through 12, is currently in progress with completion anticipated in 2014.

The renovation includes state-of-the-art open lab space for the six departments of the Swanson School of Engineering, emphasizing collaboration in nanotechnology, bioengineering, power systems engineering and computational engineering. Additions comprise of the relocation of mechanical shafts from the interior to the exterior of the building and an enclosure for these elements which seamlessly integrate with the existing building.
