The Family Pet Center embodies family-centered care and the critical importance of light and nature in the healing environment. This diminutive structure at the heart of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital provides education and coaching for families, while offering respite and repose in a tranquil, home-like setting.

The 3,950 square foot pavilion exerts an out-sized influence, providing a dynamic glassy counterpoint to surrounding brick and stone hospital buildings. Crafted with extreme precision, the structure’s sleek elliptical form is an iconic point of reference for patients, staff and visitors alike. Its bold stance is complemented and softened by garden landscape surroundings, and by the abstract tree pattern in its multi-layered facades. An aluminum trellis system fills the ellipse at roof level, concealing mechanical equipment and completing the composition as seen from overlooking patient rooms. Carefully selected interior furnishings and materials welcome families to brightly sun-lit spaces, shaded by the exterior patterned glass, and intimately connected to surrounding gardens.
