Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center / Cancer and Blood Disease Institute Outpatient Unit

Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

The Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute (CBDI) at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center underwent a renovation and growth of its outpatient clinic. Key goals for the renovation included creating an upgraded look and feel for CBDI that is welcoming, calming and uplifting; creating distinct but related Pediatric and Adolescent/Adult outpatient clinics; and creating patient/family-centered spaces.

The design of the clinic, through on-site observations, staff input and family/patient focus groups focused on providing a clinic that enabled the delivery of excellent care while providing comfortable, supportive spaces for patients and their families. Staff work rooms were enlarged to support collaboration. Clinic layout facilitated improved flow and wayfinding as well as increased patient privacy. Exam rooms were customized to support long treatment visits including a variety of seating options and positive distractions. Procedure rooms include cloud-like seek and find graphics on the ceiling to sooth anxiety. And dedicated meeting, research and child- life spaces incorporated to support patient/family experience.

The new CBDI outpatient spaces reflect Cincinnati Children’s commitment to the integration of family-centered care while changing the outcome for children around the world.
