Shenzhen Xinming Hospital / New General Hospital
Location: Shenzhen, Guangdong Province
Size: 1,453,000 SF / 135,000 SM
Xinming Hospital is designed to provide optimal care with minimal environmental impact. The 800-bed general hospital is organized as a compact square, whose boundaries are delimited by a photovoltaic canopy providing electricity for building functions. The building volume is bisected by a central "eco-valley" that controls daylight, channels natural breezes and collects rainwater for treatment and release.
The photovoltaic canopy covers and shades a generous entry plaza, providing welcome relief from the intense Guangdong sun. Sunshading screens and fins envelope the inpatient tower, while a unique vegetated wall in the eco-valley screens concourse areas from direct sun. Large portions of the site remain undeveloped, devoted to agricultural fields and water treatment wetlands.
The hospital is rigorously organized to separate and unite inpatient, outpatient and emergency departments for maximum efficiency and way-finding clarity. The design provides generous access to state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities.
This project designed in association with China IPPR International Engineering Corporation.
