Harrell also participated in a panel discussion about emerging developments in the Emergency Department. The panel explored the implications these developments have on the healthcare built environment. Jim featured the "Ribbon" design concept which is a closed loop layout of exam rooms that minimizes operating costs. The layout permits staff to effectively and efficiently manage a few more patients for a short period or until additional staff are needed. Conference attendees learned how each concept impacts hospital operations in low as well as high census.
