GBBN Shares in Cincinnati Public Schools Green Award

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times – “there’s no “I” in team”. And nowhere was that more apparent than when Terry Elfers, COO of Cincinnati Public Schools accepted The Green Business Master Award at the Green Business Awards ceremony and thanked the GBBN team for their efforts in making CPS’ vision come to fruition.

“It is truly an honor to not only be involved with CPS and managing the largest LEED for Schools effort in the country, but to be recognized for our efforts as members of the team,” said Alan Warner, AIA, LEED AP, firm principal and project manager.

CPS and GBBN have a long-standing, successful relationship having completed numerous new construction and renovation projects including Rockdale Academy, Carson Elementary, Woodford Paideia, and currently AMIS School.

“Approximately three years ago, CPS adopted sustainability guidelines setting LEED Silver as its minimum standard for all new construction and LEED-certified for all renovations through 2013,” said Warner. “GBBN was selected by CPS to serve as its project management consultant overseeing all of its projects and ensuring the Sustainability Guidelines are met.” In 2008, CPS took the lead (no pun intended) in Ohio in LEED school registrations.

“Last year at this time, there were 714 registered LEED for Schools, and Ohio had 142, exactly 20%,” said Warner. “Currently we’re at nearly 22%, and CPS – one of 614 school districts in Ohio – has more than 10% in the state and over 2% nationally.”

Statewide notoriety is definitely something to be proud of, but what’s even more impressive is that currently CPS leads in the nation in LEED school registrations.

For those into the breakdown of numbers, Ohio has more than California, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, New York, Illinois and Pennsylvania…COMBINED! “It’s this level of commitment to sustainable design that we (GBBN and CPS) are determined to maintain,” said Warner.

USGBC Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Business Courier hosted the Green Business Awards, an award for business owners who choose to go green with their projects. There were three categories: People, Planet and Prosperity, and one Master Award showing achievement in all three categories. CPS was honored with the Master Award for Integrated Performance.
