Jim Harrell Delivers Lecture to Kansas University

Jim Harrell, FAIA, FACHA conducted a lecture on the Design Process for Healthcare Architecture at Kansas University earlier this month. The lecture focused on issues of defining constraints and opportunities that drive the design, i.e. zoning, site configuration, topography, climate and existing conditions in remodeling projects. Jim further discussed the idea of passages or the connecting spaces to all of the program elements and how important that concept is in determining a successful design. The lecture went on to cover how the programmed elements - patient rooms, exam rooms, ORs, etc. are "building blocks" and how various ways of arranging them are derived from and support healthcare operations.
