Cincinnati Union Terminal in Preservation Magazine

Preservation magazine’s summer 2019 issue features the iconic—and newly restored and re-imagined—Cincinnati Union Terminal building in Cincinnati’s West End.

GBBN, along with John G. Waite Associates and Turner Construction, oversaw the three-year, $228 million-dollar effort to restore the 500,000 sf terminal building, which also houses the Cincinnati Museum Center. The article captures the entire process, from Cincinnati’s successful tax levy to fund the project, to 3D laser scan technology used to create a new set of architectural drawings, to the meticulous restoration of murals by artist Pierre Bourdelle, art deco light fixtures and mosaics.

One of the most complex parts of the project was refurbishing Union Terminal’s plaza and famous fountain. Its stones were removed and numbered, so a new waterproof membrane could be installed to protect the museum below. The stones were re-installed along with a green, rustic terrazzo finish to match the original 1933 mix found embedded under layers of old waterproofing surfaces.
