GBBN selected by ByteDance to design Beijing HQ Expansion

After an international competition to find a U.S. based design partner with a strong presence in China, Beijing based tech startup, ByteDance, has hired GBBN to design their headquarters expansion.

ByteDance’s content sharing platforms like news aggregator Jinri Toutiao, and video sharing service, TikTok, have become hugely popular—in just two years for example, TikTok has grown to 500 million users, 40% of which are outside China.

Having outgrown their 160,000 sf headquarters space, ByteDance has purchased 490,000 sf in an existing building on Beijing’s third ring road. Design of their new headquarters—which will host 5,000 employees—includes a training center, 150 meeting rooms, work and huddle spaces, ‘phone booth’ work stations, a cafe, and nap pods. “In the U.S. it can be hard to imagine the scale of the space,” says GBBN CEO Matthew Schottelkotte. “It’s like designing a fully functioning small city.”
