Daniel’s grandfather, Charles R. Yates, is 93 years old and still an active member of the American Institute of Architects. Daniel watched his grandfather (when well into his 70s), design and build himself a new house. That desire to keep practicing—using skills he could still exercise—made architecture undeniably compelling. Now a member of the AIA himself, Daniel spends a lot of his time on the university campuses where he does the bulk of his work. His recent projects include the Hillman Library transformation at the University of Pittsburgh and the renovation of Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University.
