Ben Barlage has received the 2019 Distinguished Service Award from the Kentucky state chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The award honors an individual member for a specific contribution or for dedication and service, which has significantly furthered the purposes of AIA Kentucky.

Ben has been a long-time leader and advocate for AIA’s Northern Kentucky Chapter. He served as the chapter’s treasurer for many years and has also served two terms as its president. He continues to serve as AIA Northern Kentucky’s director on the board of AIA Kentucky by bringing his energy and expertise to its Government Affairs Committee. Through his involvement with AIA Grassroots, he regularly travels to Washington, DC to lobby Congress on behalf of all architects. Ben was instrumental in securing the national AIA grant that helped turn a Boone County, Kentucky gravel pit into a public park. He is a past recipient of the 40 Under 40 Award from the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and serves as Vice Chair of the KET Northern Kentucky Board.

In addition to his work at GBBN (which include University of Kentucky Health’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Clinical Sciences Pavilion at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center), Ben constantly seeks out opportunities to embrace the role of “Citizen Architect” and positively impact the industry and his community. Ben has worked closely with Spirit of Construction Foundation and students at Woodward Career Technical High School to study, design, and construct an ADA compliant, 1,200 sf home in Cincinnati’s Bond Hill neighborhood. Part of the foundation’s “Constructing Pathways to Careers,” the initiative seeks to grow the ranks of skilled tradespeople by giving students hands-on experience. Read more about him here.
