GBBN is proud to participate in the unique design competition that is Canstruction Cincinnati. Architects, engineers, and contractors from around the city create giant sculptures entirely out of canned food. The effort helps raise awareness around the work of Cincinnati\u2019s Freestore Foodbank and supports their efforts to address hunger in the community. This year\u2019s Canstruction sculptures were built and are on display through April 12th<\/sup> at Cincinnati\u2019s Freestore Foodbank, who will distribute cans from all sculptures to their local food pantries.<\/p>\n

Our theme this year, \u201cA Not So Hungry Hippo,\u201d came together in a playful, colorful sculpture inspired by the game Hungry Hungry Hippos<\/em> and the Cincinnati Zoo\u2019s hippo celebs Fiona and Fritz. Our sculpture contains 3,850 cans filled with comforting staples like chicken noodle soup, while the exterior cans highlight the hippos\u2019 love of veggies. Our entry highlights that everyone deserves access to food that is both nutritious and joyful. .<\/p>\n

noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>At the new Cincinnati Children’s William K. Schubert M.D. Mental Health Center, a 97% reduction in restraint and seclusion hours isn’t just a statistic\u2014it’s proof that when design supports an innovative care plan, it positively impacts lives. GBBN is honored that the Center for Health Design recognized this project with a 2026 Healthcare Environment Award.<\/p>\n<p>The growing pediatric mental health care crisis in America increases the need for spaces that destigmatize and demystify treatment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/work\/cincinnati-childrens-hospital-medical-center-college-hill-behavioral-health-center\/?backProjectType=63\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">The William K. Schubert M.D. Mental Health Center<\/a> fills a critical gap by expanding access to care through a building that sends a potent message: Help, hope, and health are within reach. The largest pediatric inpatient behavioral hospital in the U.S., this facility used salutogenic and evidence-based strategies to develop an advanced care model embodied in the landscape, architecture and interior design.<\/p>\n<p>We collaborated with Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center to re-think the collection of therapeutic settings known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/insights\/milieu-creating-restorative-environments-in-behavioral-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">milieu.<\/a> These are the spaces where patients spend most of their time, participating in group therapy, guided activities, free choice time, and other therapies. The building\u2019s design was influenced by the location and variety of milieu spaces on the units within the building and their role as shared resources and destinations.<\/p>\n<p>Also integral to the design was the childhood act of building a blanket fort\u2014an intuitive gesture of creating shelter, imagination and control. Gentle curves, layered transparency and organic shapes give the building a sense of security and softness. Natural wood, textured surfaces and color-shifting dichroic glass fins evoke playfulness and discovery, making the building feel both new and familiar.<\/p>\n<p>That softness extends inside. A light-filled lobby with an oculus conveys hope; cozy nooks built into the walls offer prospect and refuge; interior columns invite touch; clear sightlines to the Family Resource Center and caf\u00e9 help visitors orient quickly, bringing a sense of calm. At night, the building glows from within\u2014lantern-like, a beacon in the landscape, like light peeking through a blanket fort.<\/p>\n<p>We partnered with researchers at Clemson University for the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of this new facility. The POE was the inaugural project helping to structure Cincinnati Children\u2019s behavioral health toolkit. \u201cThis project includes many features that are groundbreaking in behavioral health environments,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/people\/angela-mazzi\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Angela Mazzi<\/a>, who was part of GBBN\u2019s project design team. \u201cThese innovations include private rooms, no nurse stations, and an unprecedented amount and variety of milieu space. The project also features greenspace for both play therapy and horticultural therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jurors praised the project’s clear design vision, innovative care model, and thoughtful organization of therapeutic spaces, noting strong research that continued through post-occupancy\u2014and the warm, welcoming, child-friendly environment that gives patients flexibility in their noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Allegheny Health Network (AHN) recently unveiled its new $10 million centralized pharmacy facility in\u00a0Zelienople, Pennsylvania. The 20,000-square-foot hub is the first of its kind in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The facility centralizes and automates prescription fulfillment across AHN. Medications are prepared offsite and delivered to the pharmacy, consolidating staff responsible for assembly and shipping. The approach improves operational efficiency, supports more favorable insurance pricing, and leverages non-premium real estate rather than high-cost clinical space.<\/p>\n<p>The project was driven by an aggressive speed-to-market goal. “Having the Phase 1 pharmacy fit outs ready for pharmacy board review just nine months from project kickoff was a key deadline to meet,” says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/people\/mindy-coblentz\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Mindy Coblentz<\/a>, part of GBBN’s design team on the project. “By maintaining a rapid 3.5-month design schedule, which enabled permitting and construction to begin as quickly as possible, we were able to meet that goal.” Similar pharmacies elsewhere in the country have been taking almost twice as long to come online. Our nimble response to scope changes and evaluation of multiple building system strategies helped meet stringent temperature and humidity requirements. By rapidly resolving enclosure strategies, documentation, and decision-making, the project team enabled construction to begin without delay.<\/p>\n<p>“This facility is a true game-changer for how we deliver pharmacy services across our network,” said Laura Mark, Vice President of AHN Pharmacy. “By centralizing and automating prescription fulfillment, we’re not just improving efficiency \u2014 we’re strategically repositioning our hospital pharmacists to fully leverage their clinical expertise directly at the patient’s bedside, enhancing collaborative care and, most importantly, patient Now in its tenth year, the program recognizes 30 leaders under age 30 who are making a meaningful impact across Pittsburgh’s business and nonprofit communities\u2014honoring individuals who have played a significant role in growing their organizations or strengthening the region through civic and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan’s selection reflects her work across both the nonprofit and practice sectors of the profession, including leadership with the American Institute of Architecture Students and the American Institute of Architects. Through that work, she has seen how architecture can influence equity, sustainability, and civic life when architects are invited to the decision-making table.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the 2026 honorees, Jordan hopes to elevate the power of design as a catalyst for positive community impact. “I’m passionate about encouraging more young people to pursue architecture and empowering architects to take active roles in shaping policy and community conversations,” says Jordan. “Especially in an age increasingly defined by AI and automation, I want to emphasize that architecture is ultimately noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>The ribbon was recently cut at the former Saks Fifth Avenue store in downtown Cincinnati, marking a new chapter for this long-standing building in Cincinnati\u2019s quickly developing Convention District. A building that was once designed for a single activity, shopping, has been reimagined to host a vibrant mix of office and restaurant space. New tenants include the dart themed entertainment venue Flight Club, Salazar restaurant, and human capital management company, Paycor, who has established a new headquarters inside the building.<\/p>\n<p>When Saks vacated, incorporating views and natural light became essential to connecting people inside the building with the activity outside. On a relatively small budget and while navigating a tangle of easements\u2014most notably preserving the third floor\u2019s use as a ballroom connected to the hotel next door\u2014the building renovation team preserved the building\u2019s distinctive geometry, leaving its monolithic brick corners intact. Skywalks were removed from the upper floors and a new second floor balcony gives Paycor employees easy access to the outdoors. Uninterrupted brick walls now feature large, recessed windows that open the building to the street. Terracotta was also chosen to highlight the geometry of the new openings in a way that acknowledges the original while accentuating the new.”<\/p>\n<p>Critical to the project\u2019s transformation was the assembly of a creative, aligned team; developer, architect, and engineers\u00a0working in alignment\u00a0to reimagine what a \u201cleft-behind\u201d retail building could become.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdaptive reuse at this scale demands more than technical problem solving, explains GBBN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/people\/chad-burke\/\" architect.<\/p>\n<p>Becoming licensed takes dedication, focus, and stamina. It is a rigorous, often multi-year endeavor requiring at least 3,740 hours of experience in six different practice areas (e.g. Project Management, Programming & Analysis, Construction & Evaluation, etc.) and passing a set of six corresponding exams. Chandler found setting an intention helped him focus on his goal. \u201cI put a few hobbies on hold for a while to give myself the time and space to study,\u201d says Chandler. \u201cAs I got into it, I found I was more prepared than I\u2019d realized. I was also helped by the support and patience of people in my life who stuck with me when I started talking a bit too much about contracts, specifications, and vapor barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given the long and arduous process of becoming a licensed architect, what made Chandler want to pursue licensure?\u00a0\u201cA decade ago, I made a big lifestyle change by returning home to Cincinnati to become an architect. Licensure was always part of the plan. I want to continue to advance my computational design focus with the authority gained as a licensed architect, so this moment was a good opportunity to contribute to my own credentials as well as those of the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations Chandler! Driven by curiosity and intent, we start with a simple question: \u201cWhat does a client want to measure?\u201d We align our research questions with client goals, follow that with robust processes in data collection, analysis, and integration, transforming raw data into actionable knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High Rigor, Validity, and Efficiency<br \/>\n<\/strong>No matter the topic or project, we use a rigorous, valid, and efficient process in primary or secondary research. The information we\u2019re able to collect and analyze comes from occupancy evaluations of our own projects as well as from behavior observations and crowdsourced data. Observations may be done in person or through computer simulation. Observational data can be collected from physical mockups or by interacting with a virtual space using Augmented Reality. From spatial analyses of building congestion points to post-occupancy evaluations, we work to develop clear, testable hypotheses and collect the data needed to address them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cross Pollination<br \/>\n<\/strong>We share research findings across project types. This cross-pollination allows clients in the arts and healthcare to benefit from research on wayfinding or solar shading. It allows both higher education and workplace leaders to leverage research around Passive House design. We look for opportunities to integrate research into our design process, customizing it to suit the project, client goals, and budget.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thought Leadership<br \/>\n<\/strong>Research findings are packaged into digestible deliverables to help clients understand how their projects can work harder for them. We have successfully partnered with clients and university researchers to establish thought leadership in various expertise areas. Our university partners include Clemson University, University of Kentucky, Georgia Tech, and others. Since 2002, the Rising Star Leadership Program has recognized outstanding, young professional women and sought to empower them to become strong leaders, who advocate for a more equitable world.<\/p>\n<p>During monthly, full-day sessions that are facilitated by local and national experts, the program presents direct, specific training on how to confront and eliminate discrimination and how to promote racial and gender equity. It also involves nonprofit board training, so that in addition to taking on leadership roles in their workplaces, participants can foster the work of important community organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Megan is excited to deepen her ongoing commitment to designing equitable spaces while participating in the Rising Star Leadership Program. \u201cIn addition to designing equitable spaces, I\u2019m focusing on shaping strategy at a national level for the commercial interior design profession,\u201d Megan says.\u00a0 \u201cThis is a fantastic opportunity to deepen my knowledge around equity in Cincinnati
