Music Entertainment Management Inc (MEMI) recently held a media day event to celebrate the groundbreaking of The Farmer Music Center and tour the press and other guests around the construction progress to-date. Having worked with MEMI on the design of The Andrew J Brady Center Music Center in downtown Cincinnati, we’re excited to partner with them on this new, 19,000-person capacity live music venue, which is slated to open in the fall of 2027.<\/p>\n

“It has all of the modern amenities concertgoers want today,” GBBN Associate Principal and project lead Scott Kyle tells The Cincinnati Enquirer<\/em>. “It is styled like an arena but also feels intimate.” How does the design pull that off?<\/p>\n

Intimacy with the stage was critical. The relationship between the seats and the performer was carefully calibrated so audiences can feel close\u2014seeing the energy and effort of a live performance\u2014without compromising sightlines for others. That single move influenced the placement of every row, ensuring that no seat was sacrificed in favor of exclusivity.<\/p>\n

By stacking clubs, concessions, and restrooms beneath the seating bowl, patron travel distances were cut in half while doubling the number of concession points. That efficiency translates directly into revenue while making it just as easy to grab a drink or find a restroom as it is at home. The clubs\u2014each with its own identity inspired by the idea of \u201cglamping,\u201d\u2014offer a range of price points and experiences, while also creating rentable, climate-controlled spaces for off-season events.<\/p>\n

Live music looks very different than it did five years ago. Post-COVID, audiences are more selective, artists\u2019 business models have shifted, and venues are competing not just with each other\u2014but with the comfort and convenience of people\u2019s living rooms. The Farmer Music Center reimagines what a concert venue can be by filtering design moves through a simple question: does this make the experience better for the person holding the ticket?<\/p>\n

Environmental graphic design was integrated early, resulting in clear wayfinding signage, custom artwork, a consistent color story, and 18 intentional and uncluttered zones that can accommodate external brand sponsors. The result will be a venue that functions beautifully, feels effortless to navigate, and positioned as a true cultural destination\u2014one designed not just for today\u2019s concertgoer, but for the future of live music.<\/p>\n

noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) has announced the Certificate of Research Excellence (CORE) recipients for 2026. GBBN was recognized with Merit status, CORE\u2019s highest honor, for our research study, \u201cThrough Children\u2019s Eyes: Rethinking the Design of Pediatric Healthcare Arrival Spaces,\u201d which was conducted under the direction of GBBN\u2019s Director of Research, Shan Jiang, Ph.D.<\/p>\n<p>The initial moments in a healthcare facility significantly shape the experiences of patients and visitors. For pediatric patients, arrival spaces are particularly crucial in influencing their perception of care quality and overall well-being. Research has shown that feelings of fear and helplessness can lead to increased stress and reduced satisfaction among young patients. To mitigate these effects the literature emphasizes the importance of incorporating positive distractions through a child-centered design approach.<\/p>\n<p>Conducted in partnership with Jason Luthy (Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center) and Dr. Hui Cai (SimTigrate Design Lab, Georgia Tech), this Post-Occupancy-Evaluation (POE) assessed spatial navigation and behavioral patterns at Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center Burnet Campus after a renovation that integrated positive distractions and respite spaces through a collaborative effort between GBBN and Kolar Design. Key findings include an increase in relaxed and playful behavior by children in the renovated lobby; spatial anchors serve as positive distractions for young patients; and the renovated arrival zone reduced the sense of crowdedness along the main concourse while accommodating twice the previous pedestrian flow as before the renovation.<\/p>\n<p>“The study findings informed specific design and operational improvements, including spatial rearrangement decisions intended to reduce congestion and improve circulation,” noted one juror. Another jury comment called out the successful use of digital tools in the study: “The use of Space Syntax does give voice and consideration to young children who are often overlooked in design src=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/TCTPreservationAward_web2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"298\" director of Cincinnati Preservation, framed the recognition this way: “The Preservation Champion Award is unique among our honors. It recognizes individuals, organizations, or projects that demonstrate a long-term dedication to historic preservation and have made a significant impact on the Greater Cincinnati region. At its core, this award is about influence\u2014those who not only do the work, but elevate it, expanding what preservation can be and ensuring its relevance for future generations.”<\/p>\n<p>Opened in 1911, the Emery Theater stands as one of Cincinnati\u2019s most significant cultural landmarks\u2014a space where architecture, innovation, and civic life came together in a way that was ahead of its time. Originally designed as a premier concert hall, it set a new standard for performance spaces, with groundbreaking acoustics, unobstructed sightlines, and a design that prioritized the experience of every audience member. But like many historic spaces, its future was uncertain. After more than 30 years of vacancy, the building faced significant deterioration. The challenge was not just to restore it\u2014but to reimagine it in a way that would ensure its continued relevance and to turn it into a lasting and permanent home for TCT.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Emery Theater’s beautifully ornamented historic fabric has been woven together with distinctly modern technology to produce an immersive, ever-changing experience that cultivates childlike wonder long before the curtain rises. Having designed the interior fit-out of the building, we understood how Thales\u2019 workplace design standards could be thoughtfully and efficiently integrated alongside UC\u2019s existing standards within the building. noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, which drew hundreds of thousands of people to the city, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust cut the ribbon on its most transformational project: Arts Landing, a new civic amenity in downtown Pittsburgh. GBBN is proud to be part of the larger team behind the project through the adaptive reuse of two existing buildings on the site into Arts Landing’s new Visitor Center, which houses public restrooms and the park\u2019s security operations. The Visitor Center includes display space inside and will support large hanging art displays on the exteriors of the buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Arts Landing offers views of the Allegheny River and PNC Park and will welcome residents and visitors to enjoy festivals, events, performances, public art exhibits and everyday recreation and relaxation. Along with Pittsburgh\u2019s first ever Downtown playground, Arts Landing includes public art and an amphitheater. noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>GBBN is proud to participate in the unique design competition that is Canstruction Cincinnati. Architects, engineers, and contractors from around the city create giant sculptures entirely out of canned food. The effort helps raise awareness around the work of Cincinnati\u2019s Freestore Foodbank and supports their efforts to address hunger in the community. This year\u2019s Canstruction sculptures were built and are on display through April 12<sup>th<\/sup> at Cincinnati\u2019s Freestore Foodbank, who will distribute cans from all sculptures to their local food pantries.<\/p>\n<p>Our theme this year, \u201cA Not So Hungry Hippo,\u201d came together in a playful, colorful sculpture inspired by the game <em>Hungry Hungry Hippos<\/em> and the Cincinnati Zoo\u2019s hippo celebs Fiona and Fritz. Our sculpture contains 3,850 cans filled with comforting staples like chicken noodle soup, while the exterior cans highlight the hippos\u2019 love of veggies. Our entry highlights that everyone deserves access to food that is both nutritious and joyful. .<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the Freestore Foodbank or donate go <a GBBN is honored that the Center for Health Design recognized this project with a 2026 Healthcare Environment Award.<\/p>\n<p>The growing pediatric mental health care crisis in America increases the need for spaces that destigmatize and demystify treatment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/work\/cincinnati-childrens-hospital-medical-center-college-hill-behavioral-health-center\/?backProjectType=63\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">The William K. Schubert M.D. Mental Health Center<\/a> fills a critical gap by expanding access to care through a building that sends a potent message: Help, hope, and health are within reach. The largest pediatric inpatient behavioral hospital in the U.S., this facility used salutogenic and evidence-based strategies to develop an advanced care model embodied in the landscape, architecture and interior design.<\/p>\n<p>We collaborated with Cincinnati Children\u2019s Hospital Medical Center to re-think the collection of therapeutic settings known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/insights\/milieu-creating-restorative-environments-in-behavioral-health\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">milieu.<\/a> These are the spaces where patients spend most of their time, participating in group therapy, guided activities, free choice time, and other therapies. The building\u2019s design was influenced by the location and variety of milieu spaces on the units within the building and their role as shared resources and destinations.<\/p>\n<p>Also integral to the design was the childhood act of building a blanket fort\u2014an intuitive gesture of creating shelter, imagination and control. Gentle curves, layered transparency and organic shapes give the building a sense of security and softness. Natural wood, textured surfaces and color-shifting dichroic glass fins evoke playfulness and discovery, making the building feel both new and familiar.<\/p>\n<p>That softness extends inside. A light-filled lobby with an oculus conveys hope; cozy nooks built into the walls offer prospect and refuge; interior columns invite touch; clear sightlines to the Family Resource Center and caf\u00e9 help visitors orient quickly, bringing a sense of calm. At night, the building glows from within\u2014lantern-like, a beacon in the landscape, like light peeking through a blanket fort.<\/p>\n<p>We partnered with researchers at Clemson University for the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) of this new facility. The POE was the inaugural project helping to structure Cincinnati Children\u2019s behavioral health toolkit. \u201cThis project includes many features that are groundbreaking in behavioral health environments,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/people\/angela-mazzi\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Angela Mazzi<\/a>, who was part of GBBN\u2019s project design team. \u201cThese innovations include private rooms, no nurse stations, and an unprecedented amount and variety of milieu space. The project also features greenspace for both play therapy and horticultural therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jurors praised the project’s clear design vision, innovative care model, and thoughtful organization of therapeutic spaces, noting strong research that continued through post-occupancy\u2014and the warm, welcoming, child-friendly environment that gives patients flexibility in their noreferrer\">English<\/a>\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Allegheny Health Network (AHN) recently unveiled its new $10 million centralized pharmacy facility in\u00a0Zelienople, Pennsylvania. The 20,000-square-foot hub is the first of its kind in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The facility centralizes and automates prescription fulfillment across AHN. Medications are prepared offsite and delivered to the pharmacy, consolidating staff responsible for assembly and shipping. The approach improves operational efficiency, supports more favorable insurance pricing, and leverages non-premium real estate rather than high-cost clinical space.<\/p>\n<p>The project was driven by an aggressive speed-to-market goal. “Having the Phase 1 pharmacy fit outs ready for pharmacy board review just nine months from project kickoff was a key deadline to meet,” says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbbn.com\/people\/mindy-coblentz\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Mindy Coblentz<\/a>, part of GBBN’s design team on the project. “By maintaining a rapid 3.5-month design schedule, which enabled permitting and construction to begin as quickly as possible, we were able to meet that goal.” Similar pharmacies elsewhere in the country have been taking almost twice as long to come online. Our nimble response to scope changes and evaluation of multiple building system strategies helped meet stringent temperature and humidity requirements. By rapidly resolving enclosure strategies, documentation, and decision-making, the project team enabled construction to begin without delay.<\/p>\n<p>“This facility is a true game-changer for how we deliver pharmacy services across our network,” said Laura Mark, Vice President of AHN Pharmacy. “By centralizing and automating prescription fulfillment, we’re not just improving efficiency \u2014 we’re strategically repositioning our hospital pharmacists to fully leverage their clinical expertise directly at the patient’s bedside, enhancing collaborative care and, most importantly, patient Now in its tenth year, the program recognizes 30 leaders under age 30 who are making a meaningful impact across Pittsburgh’s business and nonprofit communities\u2014honoring individuals who have played a significant role in growing their organizations or strengthening the region through civic and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan’s selection reflects her work across both the nonprofit and practice sectors of the profession, including leadership with the American Institute of Architecture Students and the American Institute of Architects. Through that work, she has seen how architecture can influence equity, sustainability, and civic life when architects are invited to the decision-making table.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the 2026 honorees, Jordan hopes to elevate the power of design as a catalyst for positive community impact. “I’m passionate about encouraging more young people to pursue architecture and empowering architects to take active roles in shaping policy and community conversations,” says Jordan. “Especially in an age increasingly defined by AI and automation, I want to emphasize that architecture is ultimately
