Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is expanding its reach with the opening of Cincinnati Children’s Eastgate, a new $90 million outpatient facility that brings world-class pediatric specialty care closer to families in Clermont County and beyond. The two-story, 111,000-square-foot building houses outpatient surgery, urgent care, behavioral health, sports medicine, and a broad range of specialty clinics. Designed for accessibility and visibility along Cincinnati’s Interstate 275, the facility’s placement signals Cincinnati Children’s trusted brand for families traveling from across eastern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and West Virginia, which significantly reduces round-trip travel times for many people.

Working closely with Cincinnati Children’s, we developed an ambulatory design strategy that supports the hospital’s expansion into suburban and rural communities. The building establishes a new exterior identity for neighborhood facilities—one that both feels recognizable and responds to this site. Textures and colors convey a playful sensibility appropriate for patients from infancy through young adulthood, while interior design elements create an environment that feels supportive, uplifting, and distinctly Cincinnati Children’s. Soft, rounded edges, the interplay of light and shadow, and spaces for movement—like the central stair and connecting outdoor walking paths—evoke an understanding of how children learn and heal through play.

Organized around a central hub for intuitive navigation, the layout minimizes travel distances and enhances collaboration among care teams. Co-locating programs such as outpatient surgery, imaging, therapy, and behavioral health around shared spaces strengthens operational efficiency and the patient experience. Features like an interactive, celestial-themed ceiling with QR codes linking to stories and books turn waiting time into moments of discovery. As Cincinnati Children’s continues to extend its care network, this facility offers a model for how thoughtful, strategic design can advance health equity by bringing exceptional care closer to home for more families.
