Mercy Champion Breaks Ground
Mercy Health’s Champion Emergency Center recently broke ground in Warren, Ohio. The 30,000 SF facility will offer 24/7 emergency care, imaging, and lab services to residents in and around Trumbull County, one of Ohio’s largest—and still growing—counties.
This facility joins similar projects—Bon Secours Ashland and Bon Secours Five Forks—as the latest standardized, free-standing emergency department for the Bon Secours Mercy Health system. All three facilities use the system of scalable prototypes we created in collaboration with Bon Secours Mercy Health. This system of prototypes, which has also been used at Bon Secours Simpsonville Medical Center and Mercy Health Kings Mills Hospital, allows the health system to maintain brand recognition, deploy new facilities efficiently and cost-effectively, while also responding to the unique contexts such as different building sites, geography, climate, local communities, or culture.
While the Mercy Health Champion project is larger than its Bon Secours Ashland and Bon Secours Five Forks siblings, the scalability of the prototypes allows this free-standing emergency department to also feature a core devoted to staff support with patient treatment rooms arrayed around the building’s perimeter. Standardized layouts give physicians and staff a sense of familiarity that helps them quickly dispense care. Unique to this location will be an entry vestibule sheltered by a canopy that appears to float above it. Adjacent to the lobby and waiting area is a prayer room screened from the corridors with a perforated panel that allows in light, keeps an acoustic connection to lobby activity, but also creates a sense of privacy.
“Everything is standard but through strategic adaptation to the site, we’re able to ensure the requirements for the climate zone are met, while also keeping the same construction,” says Lynn Belhumeur, who is part of the project team. “These projects may look similar on the outside, but the prototypes allow for adaptability and flexibility. That brings a lot of value to the client.”
