GBBN’s Crane Pavilion was recently recognized as a finalist for THE PLAN Award. Created by the internationally-respected magazine, THE PLAN, the award is intended to “disseminate knowledge of and improve the quality of work done by designers, academics, critics and students” in architecture, planning, and related fields.

Projects submitted for THE PLAN Award are subject to an initial selection, after which a shortlist is passed on to an international jury of prominent designers, planners, and academics, who narrow that list to finalists, award winners, and honorable mentions.

Sitting at the edge of a wetlands preserve in Wuhan, China (home to endangered, red-crowned cranes), the Crane Pavilion is an intimate event space used primarily for funerals. The building, which was a finalist in the public space category, owes much of its elegance to its white, hand-polished, cast-in-place concrete wall. You can read about the complex assembly and experimentation required to build the wall in THE PLAN.
