Three GBBN projects won 2018 Cincinnati Design Awards (CDA) Friday night:

Our arrival and concourse transformation at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital won an Honor Award, the CDA’s highest distinction. The award, which we share with Kolar Design, recognizes interdisciplinary design excellence that incorporates architecture, interiors, landscaping and graphics as an integrated design solution.

Our Crane Pavilion in Wuhan, China received a Merit Award for architecture and the Novak Center Connector Bridge at the University of Louisville Physicians’ won Honorable Mention for architecture.

Jury comments include:

“The Cincinnati Children’s Arrival and Concourse [creates] a fantastic sense of place. Great wayfinding. Not too child-like. Not overwhelming but calming. Restrained and consistent.”

“GBBN’s work on the Crane Pavilion is quite unusual, simple folded planes of concrete that has an expressiveness that is quite extraordinary. It has a bird-like origami feel to it and sits well in the landscape.”

“The Novak Center Connector Bridge is an expression of the structure, the lightness of it, and the degree of the structural playfulness of it.”

The local chapters of five Cincinnati design organizations join together for the CDAs:

  • American Institute of Architects (AIA)
  • International Interior Design Association (IIDA)
  • American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)
  • American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)
  • Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD)

The annual awards banquet at Cincinnati’s historic Memorial Hall, honors the best in local architecture, interiors, landscape, and experiential graphic design. The CDA 2018 Jurors were:

Mark Sexton, FAIA of Kreuck and Sexton Architects in Chicago, IL; Sandy Gordon, FASID and founder of Sandy Gordon Interiors in Madison, WI; Bryan Meszaros of OpenEye Global in New York, New York; Mark Dawson, FASLA, Principal with Sasaki Associates, Inc. in Boston, MA; and Eric Avner, CEO, People’s Liberty in Cincinnati, OH.
