How We’re Leveraging Technology to Save Time, Reduce Site Visits, and Improve Project Accuracy
Matterport® is a spatial data platform that turns real-world physical spaces into accurate, interactive 3D digital models. We use it to document existing conditions and measure spaces, giving our design teams and consultants a more complete understanding of a project after just one site visit. By capturing both a visual record and dimensional data, it allows us to gather what we need without repeatedly disturbing a client’s space. It also creates a point cloud model that can be used to develop a Revit model, helping establish a more accurate starting point during design and predesign.

In the early phases of a project, Matterport® helps our team field verify what existing drawings show against what is actually on site. During construction, it provides a record of the as-built condition and allows us to compare spaces at different phases side by side. It helps us capture what is behind walls and above ceilings before those areas are covered up and can be shared with contractors and clients for future reference. For clients, that means fewer site visits, less disruption, more accurate documentation, and reduced time and cost. For our project teams, it speeds the process of design by creating a shared understanding of existing space, facilitating solutions more quickly while also reducing the number of meetings required.
For example: operating rooms are high-use and high-value spaces for any hospital. As part of a recent operating room renovation, Matterport® allowed us to scan approximately 25,000 square feet of operating rooms in about five hours, capturing everything we needed in a single visit. By reducing disruption to the spaces, we minimized downtime for our client. At the same time, our reduced travel time to the site and the accuracy of Matterport® measurements means less time managing logistics and more time solving the right challenges for the project.
