Shan Jiang Joins GBBN as New Director of Research

GBBN recently welcomed a new Director of Research. Shan Jiang, PH.D., International ASLA joins the firm from West Virginia University’s School of Design and Community Development, where she was an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture.

Shan holds a PH.D. in Planning Design and the Built Environment (Architecture + Health) from Clemson University and has authored or co-authored dozens of articles on the relationship between people and their environment, therapeutic landscapes, healthcare design, and sustainable community development. She also recently published a monograph titled Nature Through a Hospital Window: The Therapeutic Benefits of Landscape in Architectural Design as part of Rutledge’s Health and the Built Environment series.

“As we continue building our reputation as a research-based design firm, we’re excited to add Shan Jiang to the team” says GBBN CEO, Matthew Schottelkotte. “Shan brings years of proven leadership in built environment research, and in her role, she will help us elevate our primary research while ensuring that we draw from the best available research in our designs.”

Based in GBBN’s Pittsburgh office, Shan will lead firm-wide research efforts, helping design teams in all cities and markets conduct research while integrating the latest design research into their work.
