GBBN Wins Two AIA Pittsburgh Awards

Two GBBN projects have been recognized with awards for design excellence in 2025 from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pittsburgh.

The new, all-electric, net-zero ready house for Ronald McDonald House Charities Dayton received an Honor Award. Jury comments include: “Loved this project. The concept of beginning with a kid’s sketch of home carrying through not only the overall form but the interior design decisions make it a home away from home. Even though it’s a large building, it hints at rowhome scale on the exterior and creates cozy spaces on the interior. The use of shake siding brings warmth and playfulness that divorces it from the institutional realm.”

The renovation of the LEED Gold Richard Kind Mellon Foundation Headquarters received a Certificate of Merit. Jury comments include: “A good example of transformation of an existing building to a modern use.” Using natural materials like FSC certified wood, stone, and glass, the renovation organizes the most highly-used common amenities in the workspace (like the café and casual meeting spaces) under an existing central skylight to create the “heart” of the office where employees, grantees, and guests can interact. Within the same week, this project also received a Bronze Award from the 2025 Biophilic Design Awards. Sponsored by the International Plantscape Industry Alliance, the award recognizes the way the renovation reflects the client’s commitments to conservation, community, and well-being through immersive biophilic design.
