A Light-Filled Oasis comes to a “Medical Desert”
With a vision of serving every member Cincinnati’s of Springfield Township community within a 15-minute drive from their home, TriHealth recently debuted TriHealth Finneytown, its newest ambulatory care center. With nearly 95% of TriHealth patient encounters happening in ambulatory settings, CEO Mark Clement noted, “This project is about delivering the right care in the right place.”
TriHealth’s mission of bringing better care, better health, and better value to its patients is physically expressed in the architecture of TriHealth Finneytown through light-filled spaces, views to outdoor landscaping and treetops, and a building that encourages movement and supports staff respite.
Windows along the front façade of the building appear as a single wide band that travels from the lobby, up the stairs and across the second floor, using natural light to indicate a patient’s travel path through the building. Strategically placed windows at the ends of corridors allow staff working in the clinical areas of the building to have views to the outdoors at nearly every turn. Framed views punctuate both ends of the central corridor on the second floor—a span of 200ft. “Views outside not only bring light into a typically cavernous work area, but also serve as wayfinding cues, instilling a sense of empowerment within patients as they navigate their way through the clinic,” says Matt Scott, part of the GBBN design team on the project.
The crisis of wellbeing among healthcare professionals is well-documented. The design of this project helps uplift hardworking staff and make their work more productive. Patients travel to exam rooms and diagnostic spaces without having to enter the staff’s clinical workspace, so collaboration and conversation can happen without impacting patient privacy. Acoustically private “phone booth” style cabinets offer physicians additional privacy when charting. Daylight, a known mood-booster, fills corridors and workspaces as well as patient waiting areas. The two-story staff break room is connected by a staff-only stair. Windows bring natural light into the space and, despite the facility’s location just off a busy highway, the views out to surrounding trees give the space a feeling of privacy and calm. TriHealth Finneytown also includes what has become a signature feature in TriHealth ambulatory centers: living plant walls.
The facility will open in phases over the next several weeks, beginning with family medicine, pediatrics, and internal medicine. TriHealth Finneytown will also offer OB/GYN, imaging, cardiology, cardiac diagnostic testing, ENT/audiology, neurology, interventional pain management, and urology.
