Contemporary Craft Opens

Contemporary Craft, a community arts anchor in Pittsburgh, opened the doors of its new home to the public last week with timed entrances. The transformed space is a physical expression of the community it serves and will enhance both making and engaging with local art and artisans. “Contemporary Craft is a resource for a whole community of contemporary artists,” said artist Christine Bethea, at a preview of the space over Zoom.

This project is a labor of love around craft. A permanent, customized installation near the entrance forms the soundwaves to visually proclaim, ‘Art is Life’ to passersby as they move along the façade of the building. Additional customized elements throughout the space—including the stair railing, cabinetry, furniture, and light fixtures made by artists at the Pittsburgh Glass Center—all speak to value of art, dedication to craft, and the unique properties of handmaking.

Contemporary Craft welcomes visitors to their new home with a solo exhibition, “The Heart Speaks Through the Hand” a collection of work by the artist Callie Curry, aka Swoon.
