HCD Bronze Award for UC Health Medical Center, Main Entrance Improvements

GBBN’s work on the Main Entry improvements at UC Health Medical Center was recognized with a Bronze Award from Healthcare Design Magazine in the Remodel/Renovation Category.  By surfacing—the hidden textures, lines, and symmetries that can’t be detected by the human eye alone—we helped UC Health physically express their unique brand, their culture of hope, and the power of academic medicine. Using essential building blocks of design—arrival, orientation, transition—the project also creates intuitive wayfinding for arrival (where do I go?), orientation (where do I go from here?), and transition (there’s where I go next) empowering people to navigate the space.

The jury appreciated the exterior noting, “the ribbing, the angled uplifted front piece, and the way the canopy turns down the building and glass storefront. It is difficult to design a canopy that integrates a mixture of older existing architecture with the new concept of expressing the ‘science’ to convey the sense of hope.” The jury also called attention to the transformed lobby, commenting that “the transformation of the lobby is nothing short of dramatic. Leveraging a clever lighting strategy, the interior’s geometries are elegantly highlighted, resulting in a space that exudes cleanliness, elegance, serenity, and chic sophistication.”

Many thanks to the Healthcare Design Magazine jury for the accolades! And to the project team: Kolar Design (environmental graphics); Heapy (MEP); THP Limited (structural engineering); REALM Collaborative (landscape architecture); The Lighting Practice (lighting); The Kleingers Group (civil engineering).
