As a university at the cutting edge of research and technology, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) provides a learning environment where students and faculty can collaborate beyond the boundaries of a lecture hall. Unfolding in phases to minimize disruption, this renovation and addition to the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy supports the learning lifestyle of CMU students.

The renovation of Hamburg Hall creates collaborative learning classrooms and comfortable spaces for students to study and work together between classes.

A new shared courtyard, connecting Hamburg Hall and CMU’s Robotics Institute at Smith Hall next door, will ultimately be enclosed with glass. A classroom at the heart of the courtyard only appears to be covered in quarried stone; up close, these manufactured concrete panels reveal a distinctive texture, integrating digital fabrication innovations into the built environment.
