Smart demolition decisions help a
hospital system plan for the future.
Planned deconstruction design

UPMC turned to GBBN for an innovative deconstruction solution to partially demolish an existing building. By helping identify the right construction joint to initiate demolition, UPMC was able to keep their operating rooms functioning and salvage more of the existing structure.

BEFORE
AFTER

Envisioned as a beacon that would bring better public exposure to the facility, the preserved structural bays became a circulation core, providing accessibility for medical staff as well as patients arriving via non-emergency transportation. The bays are clad in an exterior high-performance rain screen featuring large expanses of glass, which helps to reveal activity and let in light on every floor.

The project defined a clear, branded entry to the campus and injected green space into a dense urban neighborhood. Strategic demolition is a growing need for aging hospital systems. It can be an opportunity to enhance existing facilities while making smart provisions for efficient future construction.
