Preparing for the Next 50 Years of Discovery

The vision for the Clinical Sciences Pavilion at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital was a lofty one – to facilitate groundbreaking research for the next 50 years and beyond. The 15-story, 458,000 SF building was completed in July 2015 as an addition to the existing research complex. Cincinnati Children’s is currently ranked as #3 on US News and World Report’s list of Best Children’s Hospitals, and is a world-renowned leader in pediatric research. The overall architectural design and integrated design components responded to this vision through the creation of environments that enhance the various functions and goals associated with each one. The research components include wet bench laboratories, computational research offices and suites for ambulatory clinical research. The building also houses dedicated space tailored to recruitment, donor and Board functions, as well as office space for the senior leadership team. The session presented a case study of this building; explored the response of architecture and design to essential needs and broad goals; described the setting of those goals and the reality of translating them into the real world through design, construction, move-in and ongoing facilities management and maintenance.

John Blignaut, AIA, LEED AP and Jack Randall, FMP presented this Case Study.
