GBBN takes home 3 Awards from the 2017 CDA’s

CINCINNATI – At AIA Cincinnati’s annual Cincinnati Design Awards (CDA) banquet on November 3, 2017, GBBN took home three awards: The new Cincinnati Shakespeare Company Theater and Pittsburgh’s 8th Street Park and Water Cube each garnered an Honor award, AIA Cincinnati’s highest distinction. Suzhou General Hospital received Honorable Mention.

During the awards ceremony, the jury singled out the Cincinnati Shakespeare Theater as “setting a high bar for design excellence in Cincinnati,” and called out the project’s connections to community that help create a spirited cultural beacon, and the creative use of materials, signage and other details that bring Shakespeare to life.

The jury selected the 8th Street Park and Water Cube as “a unique, artistic solution that celebrates the importance of water in the public realm while promoting environmental values.” Additional jury panel comments highlighted the cross disciplinary nature of the project and the Water Cube’s message of sustainability.

At the new Suzhou General Hospital, located in Suzhou, China, jurors appreciated the ways this large, 1000-bed facility in Science & Technology City “breaks down the institutional scale of the buildings by creating a series of diverse landscaped courtyards blending the interior with the exterior.”

The Cincinnati Design Awards celebrate the best built environment design produced by the region’s creative firms and promotes the social and economic value of good design in our community. Each year, a distinguished jury of design leaders and practitioners from across the country recognizes projects created by architecture, interiors, landscape, and experiential graphic designers. This year’s jury included: Gabriel Smith, FAIA and director of Thomas Phifer and Partners in New York City; Courtney Armstrong, IIDA, partner at Studio BV in Minneapolis, MN; Amy Lukas, partner at Infinite Scale Design Group in Salt Lake City, UT; Barbara Wilks, FAIA, FASLA, principal at W Architecture & Landscape Architecture in Brooklyn, NY; and Jay Becker co-founder of BLDG in Covington, KY.
