Three AIA Pittsburgh Awards for GBBN

Three GBBN projects have received awards from the American Institute of Architects Pittsburgh (AIA PGH).

At the awards ceremony, Tree Pittsburgh’s Headquarters took home an Honor Award. “The Tree Pittsburgh Headquarters presents a textbook in sustainable and energy-efficient design,” said the jury. “Its light touch on the landscape and siting on the river speak to its purpose and the client’s mission.” The project used modular, prefabricated, construction techniques to minimize soil disruption on a former industrial site along the Allegheny River. This net-positive energy project uses a tight thermal envelope and is powered by photovoltaic cells that offset energy use. GBBN will be presenting this project at Living Future 20 next year in Seattle, Washington.

Marian Spencer Hall on the campus of the University of Cincinnati received a Certificate of Merit Award from the jury. “Literally and whimsically, Marian Spencer Hall peels away the dread of the traditional student housing block to reveal today’s dynamic collegiate experience and to expose student life to the active urban campus,” they said. “Subtle and understated, the project [demonstrates] deliberate thoughtfulness in its beautifully executed details.”  Marian Spencer Hall not only fosters a sense of belonging by providing a variety of types of spaces, it also capitalizes on UC’s unique urban setting and connects residents to the joys of city living.

The Baldwin Borough Public Library received a Certificate of Merit Award. “Simple design decisions open up the space, adding warmth to the exterior and creating a massive transformation to the library,” said the jury. This project makes a valuable community resource much more visible to the community (with a significant immigrant population) that can most benefit from it.
