Better Housing: Equitable Decarbonization through Collaboration

With current housing shortages, it is time for transformative, sustainable, affordable housing that addresses our current climate crisis equitably through collaboration. This panel at the Midwest Regional Sustainability Conference illustrated a process of community engagement and collaboration between residents and developers that results in low-carbon, high-performance buildings. The panel was moderated by GBBN’s Tiffany Broyles Yost AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Fitwel Ambassador. Insights were presented by GBBN’s Amanda Markovic AIA, as well as Lann Field, Vice President of Development at Cincinnati Development Corporation (3CDC), and Tim Westrich, Vice President of Affordable Housing at Urban Sites.

Lann and Tim shared why energy-efficient and high indoor air quality are important to affordable housing in Cincinnati. Amanda shared how design decisions, technical challenges, and performance modeling impacted our affordable housing work. GBBN project examples included:

Amanda Markovic, Market Design Leader – Community Development, Principal
Amanda is driven by design’s power to transform experience and empower communities in urban centers, the workplace, and academia. Her passion for equitable development has guided her community-centered approach to Bridging the Gap’s mixed-use, Passive House project in Pittsburgh’s Uptown neighborhood. Amanda facilitates productive discussions among multiple project stakeholders. Her desire to connect everyone to good design has led her to become a leader in the American Institute of Architects Blueprint for Better Communities (B4B) initiative.

Tiffany Broyles Yost, Director of Sustainability & Resilience, Associate
As GBBN’s Director of Sustainability & Resilience, Tiffany provides strategic leadership for sustainable design across the firm’s portfolio of projects, manages the research of the firm’s Sustainability Action Network, oversees our Sustainability Action Plan, and spearheads related educational initiatives. Her work includes sustainable design on projects at all scales from international supertall mixed-use buildings to single story existing building renovations. Tiffany serves on several non-profit boards and committees including, the Greenbuild Summit Advisory Board, the Fitwel Advisory Council, the Louisville Sustainability Council, and the Green Umbrella/Cincinnati 2030 District Health Strategy Committee.
