For a third year in a row, GBBN has won an Excellence in Masonry Design Award from the Tristate Masonry Institute (TMI), a professional organization that provides educational support for masonry contractors, design professionals, and education centers. Each year, the TMI celebrates the best in masonry design at their Excellence in Masonry Awards Banquet.

This year, an award went to Willkommen on Vine. A widely celebrated mixed-use, mixed-income building in Cincinnati’s historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, Willkommen on Vine is distinguished by its unusual brick façade.

“The building’s undulating façade has received a lot of attention,” says GBBN’s Doug Richards. “But there was some skepticism about whether it could be executed as envisioned. We used parametric design, augmented reality, and physical mockups to work with our trade partner, J Construction Masonry, to ensure the constructability and budget for the design.”

“In the end,” Doug adds, “it required a level of craftsmanship that is rarely seen in modern buildings, but by leveraging technology and our partners’ skill, we made it happen.”
