Astro Chimp, a large mural that originally adorned an exterior wall of our NE neighbor Quincy Hall, was created in 2018 by artists Lizardman, Blaster, and Ugaso, members of Minneapolis art collective @rogue_citizen
Now preserved inside Quincy Hall, we wanted to pay homage to their work, the district’s history, and the ever-evolving nature of art by bringing a new interpretation of Astro Chimp into our workspace. Illuminated at night, it becomes a beacon for the neighborhood. Our office custom wall is comprised of:

140 custom brackets
Welding by Checkpoint Welding and powder coated by Quality Painting, both #mpls based companies. GBBN’s Design Issues Series (DIS) JOY exhibit recently wrapped up a tour of Louisville, Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati—the cities where GBBN’s US offices are located.
Mixing both high- and low-tech creative pursuits to encourage joy, the exhibits featured hands-on making like printing and collaging, interactive augmented reality activities, and displays of employees’ personal objects of joy. While the exact form of the exhibit varied with each location, each event prompted interesting conversations about design, joy, making, and the built environment while creating openings for future collaborations.

@ywcacincinnati recently celebrated the opening of its new domestic violence shelter. The project doubles their capacity to serve survivors in Cincinnati. The new shelter was designed using a trauma-informed approach to promote dignity and healing for survivors. “In these spaces, they’re able to be in their own haven with their family, cook their own meals, and not have to share a bathroom,” said YWCA Chief Program Officer, Jawana Glover. Built in less than a week by our Co-ops as part of our Design Issues Series exhibit ‘JOY’ in Cincinnati, we built a Spark Wall, where we can display some of the things that spark joy in us! The build also served as proof of concept for deploying Augmented Reality on the construction site.
The wall was constructed of over 1600 wood blocks measuring 1-1/2x3-1/2” x 8.” Our co-ops wore the Hololens AR goggles, which showed them the previous course (red) and footprint of the next course (cyan). This gave them enough information to reference their location on the current build as well as where to place adhesive at the overlapping areas. A grasshopper script allowed them to navigate between courses as needed.
Each course is roughly 50 blocks (+\-) and two co-ops were able to complete a course in 10 to 15 minutes. There were 36 courses in total, but with a varied height across the length of the wall. The twist: our co-ops didn’t know what they were building; they just knew the current course they were working on. Come see how accurate to the rhino model they were able to build.
